2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a more defined direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Below is the full message from the president's communication:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our audience.

The belief in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the recent years creating and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all eager to continue witnessing the development of the game in the months to come.

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and tests that change every round. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Or aim high, put it on the line, and trust your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can expect additional details as production advances.
